When our partners at Accor asked us to create an activation for their Toronto Sales Mission, we saw an opportunity to get creative. The event was held in the iconic Library Bar at the Fairmont Royal York – and that immediately made us think: books.
For a reception-style activation, simplicity and interactivity are key. Guests have limited time, so the experience needed to be easy to join and invite movement around the space to encourage connection.
Our “little free library” activation did just that. We built a custom library that reflected the brand and scattered children’s books throughout the venue for guests to discover. The invitation was simple: find a book, bring it to the library, customize a bookmark if you like, and help us fill the collection for our community partner, TNG Community Services.
Why this matters beyond business goals:
- Brain development: Regular exposure to stories strengthens neurological development and improves cognition, critical thinking, and story comprehension.
- Language and literacy: Books introduce new vocabulary and sentence structures, building the foundation for strong communication and future academic success.
- Empathy and perspective: Reading lets children experience others’ lives and emotions, fostering appreciation for different cultures and backgrounds.
- Emotional regulation: Stories about characters facing challenges help children understand and manage their own feelings.
- Stronger relationships: Sharing a book creates a comforting environment that strengthens the bond and communication between parent and child.
We placed the completed library in a high-traffic area outside the children and family centre at TNG Community Services, making books easily accessible for families as part of their regular routine. A trip to a public library isn’t always possible because of schedule, availability, or transportation – this brought books directly to the families and a longstanding community initiative for the neighbourhood to support and enjoy.
Thank you Accor and Fairmont Hotels for your trust in making this happen! We’ve already seen a number of smiles brought on through the library.
