CSR in your business – why it matters

Last week we attended a local workshop put on by Mariam Lawani (Purpose as Core Strategy: Sustainability, a Strategic Business Advantage). The session was packed with statistics and content that had me nodding my head yes and thinking about the role we play in the growth and longevity of the businesses we work with. There were a few key takeaways that impacted my mindset as a small business, and that I hope will do the same for you – here they are.

Over 97% of businesses in Canada are SMEs (200 employees or less). We make up a huge portion of the market and it’s up to us to lead change. We provide solutions and services, but we also exist to impact the world. How can we maximize this opportunity?

Purpose is not just a trend – it’s a strategy for legacy. When we minimize our environmental footprint and promote social care, we ensure long term profitability. Small changes up front make an impact in the big picture.

How well do we know the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and which ones can we embrace? We can’t do everything, but we can do something. Best place to start, look at your business, schedule a deep dive and identify the opportunities (where you have control), then pick 3 small changes you can make now.

Whether you’ve got sustainability at the core of your business, or you’re just getting started, here’s a little bit of inspiration, and a reminder that together we can move forward faster.
